Annual Events
The Minneapolis Aquatennial, the country's oldest summertime festival,
takes place every year in July. Highlights include a kickoff block party
in downtown Minneapolis, two parades, a milk carton boat race (left),
a sand-sculpture contest and fireworks.
Parks and Recreation
Minneapolis has nearly 170 parks that cover more than 6,300 acres of
land and water. Many of these parks are centered around large lakes
and include hiking, biking and walking trails, picnic facilities and
activities.
Schools
Minneapolis is home to the main campus of the University of Minnesota:
one of the country's largest and most respected universities.
The Minneapolis Public School District consists of 77 different schools
for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as extensive
early childhood, after-school and community education programs.
Sports
The Hubert Humphrey Metrodome is home to the Minnesota Twins (baseball),
the Minnesota Vikings (football), and the University of Minnesota Gopher
football team. The Timberwolves (basketball), play in their own arena,
the Target Center, located on the other side of downtown. The Xcel energy
Center is home of the Minnesota Wild (hockey)
